akari-style-23a-paper-pendant-light
Akari 23A Paper Pendant Light

There's a reason paper lanterns have stayed relevant in home lighting for the better part of a century: nothing else diffuses light quite the way rice paper does, soft, glowing, slightly uneven in a way that reads as handmade rather than manufactured. The 23A hangs at just over two feet tall with a generous 12.6-inch diameter, big enough to become the visual anchor of a dining room or living space without needing anything else on the ceiling to compete with it. Switched on at dusk, the whole shade seems to glow from within rather than simply emitting light downward, filling a room with an ambient warmth that's almost impossible to replicate with a shaded lamp or a bare bulb. During the day, unlit, it holds its sculptural oval form as a quiet piece of paper architecture suspended in the room. It's especially effective over a dining table where you want light spread wide and low rather than focused in a single downward cone, since the paper scatters the glow in every direction rather than throwing shadows straight down onto the tabletop. For a room that could use one confident, soft-edged gesture instead of several small fixtures, the 23A does that work on its own, unpretentious, warm, and instantly recognizable as the kind of lighting that makes a house start to feel considered.

A wrapped rice paper shade sits over an internal metal frame that gives the lantern its oval structure and keeps the paper taut and evenly shaped over years of use. It runs on a standard E27 LED bulb rated up to 30 watts on 110V-240V current, bright enough that the paper glows fully rather than looking dim or patchy at the edges. Installation comes in two formats: hardwired, with a choice of 6-foot or 16-foot adjustable cord, the longer option bundled with three metal wire clips for tidy routing and finished with a 3.9-inch ceiling cup; or plug-in, with an inline on-off switch on a 16-foot cord, also including wire clips plus a right-angle bracket or hook, with the switch sitting about 80cm from the plug for easy reach while seated. That plug-in version means the 23A can go into a rental or a room without existing ceiling wiring, simply hung from a hook and switched on at the cord. The paper itself is more delicate than glass or metal, so it should stay away from ceiling fans or high-traffic doorways where it could get bumped, but properly hung and left alone, it holds its shape and color for years of daily use.

Monvera Space carries the Akari-style 23A because a paper lantern this well made brings a kind of soft, unforced warmth into a room that harder materials rarely achieve. Hang it over a dining table as the room's single light source, or use it in a living room corner paired with a floor lamp for layered evening lighting. It suits a wood-floored, plant-filled room particularly well, echoing the natural, slightly imperfect textures already present in linen curtains or a rattan chair. Because the plug-in version needs no rewiring, it's an easy way to bring real presence to a rented apartment living room without asking a landlord for anything. Whatever room it ends up in, expect the 23A to become the fixture that gets switched on first each evening, less because it's the brightest option and more because its glow is simply the one everyone in the room gravitates toward. It also travels well between homes, since the shade collapses flat for storage between moves, a small practical bonus for a fixture that otherwise feels entirely about atmosphere rather than logistics, and it packs down easily enough that even a cross-country move doesn't have to mean leaving it behind, which is more than can be said for most fixtures this size once a moving truck is involved.

Size: D12.6" x H24.8" (32 x 63 cm)

Bulb: E27 LED, max 30W, 110-240V

Materials: metal frame, rice paper shade

Hardwired: 6ft/16ft cord, 3.9" ceiling cup

Plug-in: 16ft cord, inline switch, wire clips + bracket/hook

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0841/6316/6452/files/hf_20260812_043915_f3722420-eba6-4842-be81-2359de45fb21.png?v=1786509666
